Nancy Guthrie Update: Range Rover Outside Culver's Searched, 3 Detained

Three people have allegedly been detained in the Nancy Guthrie case, but it's unclear whether they're suspects. Videos and photos online showed law enforcement officers searching a Range Rover at a Culver's parking lot, while shielding the search from public view with a yellow sheet.

Fox News reported, via an anonymous source, that the three people were detained on February 14 as a flurry of law enforcement activity erupted in the early morning hours. "Three people have been detained in the Nancy Guthrie case, but it's unclear whether they're suspects," Fox News wrote, adding that a search warrant was executed. During a warrant execution, “technically everyone is detained," the source cautioned to Fox News.

A Shadow Hills resident told News 4 Tucson "that she witnessed three people being detained during a SWAT operation on Friday night. According to an unconfirmed report by a neighbor, another person shot himself in the head," that television station reported, adding, "A man and a woman were detained at the house, and a third person was detained in a traffic stop."

In addition, The New York Times reported: "Local deputies and F.B.I. investigators have converged on a second scene in the parking lot of a Culver’s about a five-minute drive away from the residential neighborhood they have sealed off." ABC 15 journalist Nick Ciletti wrote on X that "one man was detained" at the Culver's scene.

"They are focusing on a gray Range Rover, which they have been photographing and shining a flashlight into," The Times added. It's not definitively confirmed whether this search is related to the Guthrie case, though.

Video Showed Authorities Taking Photos of the Range Rover at Culver's

To be clear, sometimes law enforcement detains a person for questioning, and then it doesn't pan out. That was the case a few days before the current searches with a Tucson delivery driver. He was eventually released and adamantly denied any connection to Guthrie's disappearance during impromptu interviews outside a house.

Thus, it's important to remember that law enforcement investigations can be very fluid and sometimes leads, while they get a flurry of attention, don't turn into anything substantive.

Authorities are saying almost nothing about the current detainments or the Culver's search, the news of which broke just after midnight on February 14. "There is no press briefing scheduled for tonight regarding the Nancy Guthrie investigation. A written statement is forthcoming," the Pima County Sheriff wrote on X around midnight.

Law Enforcement Activity Was Underway at a Residence Near 'E. Orange Grove Road & North First Avenue,' the Sheriff Confirmed

The Sheriff's Office subsequently released two additional statements on X around 1 a.m. central time. They provided a couple of additional details.

"Law enforcement activity is underway at a residence near E Orange Grove Rd & N First Ave related to the Guthrie case. Because this is a joint investigation, at the request of the FBI - no additional information is currently available," Pima County wrote.

"Reporting that current law enforcement activity is surrounding a home belonging to a former county attorney is NOT accurate," the Sheriff's Office added.

Sheriff Chris Nanos has told 13 News that law enforcement is "actively working a lead. I cannot say anything else.”

According to Fox News, law enforcement "swarmed" a location that is about two miles from the home of Guthrie, 84, who vanished in the early morning hours of February 1 from her Tucson home. Guthrie is the mother of TODAY Show co-host Savannah Guthrie.

The New York Times reported that "law enforcement officers came to a neighborhood about two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home and closed off a street."

Over the last few days, there has been a flurry of developments in the case. The FBI released a series of chilling videos and photos of the masked and armed suspect that the agency recovered from Guthrie's door camera. The FBI then released a height estimate of the suspect, as well as details about his backpack.

Then, on February 13, came news that authorities had identified DNA that does not belong to Guthrie. Authorities also found several gloves, but it's not clear whether those have any bearing on the case, CNN reported. And media outlets continue to field alleged ransom notes demanding bitcoin for Nancy's return.
