Is X (Twitter) Down? Social Media Platform Facing Major Outages
X - formerly known as Twitter - is a social media platform with up to 650 million monthly users around the globe. More than 132 million users access the social media platform on a daily basis.
Many users woke up on Monday, Feb. 16 to find X not working on their respective devices, leading to a spike in searches for whether or not the social media site suffered another outage.
Is X (Twitter) Down?
On Monday, Feb. 16 users started reporting issues with the social media platform. As of 9 a.m. ET, DownDefector noted over 40,000 people reporting an issue with X - a number that keeps growing with each passing minute.
Outages have been reported in the United Kingdom, India and now the United States is being hit by major outages.
X (Twitter) Suffered Major Outages in January, November
This is the latest major outage for the social media platform and the second of 2026 so far. In January a significant outage impacted thousands not long after owner Elon Musk revealed the company would publish the algorithmic code for X’s news feed and ads, so that it can provide more transparency around how its systems decide what each user sees in the app.
“We will make the new X algorithm, including all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users, open source in 7 days. This will be repeated every 4 weeks, with comprehensive developer notes, to help you understand what changed,” he said on the social media platform.
In November 2025 the company suffered is most severe outage.
“Cloudflare, a major cloud and network service provider reported an outage early on Tuesday, No. 18. The outage left many websites and platforms like X, formerly Twitter, without service for several hours,” the Asbury Park Press wrote.
Cloudfare issued a statement at the time revealing it didn’t know the direct cause of the issue. “We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic. We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors,” the company said.
