Winter Storm Warnings Announced for 7 Inches of Snow as Winter Rebounds

Monday, March 2, marks the beginning of the first official week of March, and the United States is already into its meteorological spring, but the National Weather Service (NWS) continues to issue winter weather warnings for areas of the country.

As the early days of spring arrive, the NWS has issued winter storm warnings and watches for areas of the Midwest and Northeast, and weather experts warn that areas of the country that missed the blizzard of 2026 last week may not be so lucky this time.

Northeast and Midwest Looking to Get an Upwards of 7 Inches of Snow

The Northeast just had the blizzard of 2026, but areas that escaped the snow may finally be getting it. Looking at Monday, March 2, into Tuesday, March 3, the weather experts at AccuWeather tell Men's Journal that, according to their research, "With fresh Arctic air in place, warm and moist air colliding with the cold air may produce widespread snow, sleet and freezing rain across parts of the Great Lakes and Northeast. Snow and ice totals will depend on the storm’s track and strength."

They add that "some areas that missed the recent Blizzard of 2026 could receive several inches of snow and/or some ice this time."

So, areas that didn't get hit with the snow and ice from the blizzard are in line for several inches of the cold, white snow. The NWS adds, "the start of meteorological spring (March 1st) and the first full week of the month. The week ahead will become more active across the country."

Expect Travel Disruptions Through Wednesday, March 4, Weather Experts Say

AccuWeather adds that "travel disruption risk will increase Monday through Wednesday," and major airport hubs including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Detroit and Chicago could certainly get a bevy of delays.

Even rain may cause travel issues. "Where rain falls, most likely in parts of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic states," they state, "urban flooding is possible. A farther north track could elevate the risk of ice jams and related stream and river flooding, affecting infrastructure and logistics."

The good news is that warmer temperatures are expected to follow later in the week, melting the new snow. "Back-to-back storms will bring snow and ice to start off March before spring-like temperatures take hold across much of the East by late week," AccuWeather stated on X.

Even though the metrological spring has started, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere is March 20. According to the Farmer's Almanac, "this falls on a Friday and is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere."
