Spring pantomime coming this weekend
The usual peak time for pantomime is Christmas, yet an upcoming production arrives with spring. Cinderella: The Pantomime by the Premiere Group is about to lift the curtain this weekend with two shows at the Polemidia Municipal Theatre. Why wait for winter’s overpacked calendar for a show full of fun and giggles?
“Christmas is such a busy period we didn’t want to add another night to everyone’s hectic schedule. So, we decided to wait for the lull after Carnival when everything is calmer,” says the show’s assistant director Sharon Chorbadjian. With just days to go until this fairy tale comes to life, the final dress rehearsals are underway.
“The final week is always more intense but through that, stronger bonds are created, and that is why we do it, building community with a little razzmatazz along the way!”
The timeless tale of Cinderella will welcome audiences of all ages, for two evenings of silly song and dance, and comical affairs as a love story unfolds between a young downtrodden woman and a prince.
“The story of a young woman forced into slavery through no fault of her own is still a sad reality of today’s modern society,” comments Chorbadjian. “We, of course, prefer to turn away from the difficult parts of this fairy story when in reality we should be facing them head on. This is an issue that profoundly touches me. I long to live in a world where justice prevails and our vulnerable members of society are protected. If only we could all be a fairy Godmother to someone and help them escape the harsh realities they face.”
Joining forces together on stage is a 22-member cast, aged 10 to 70 years old! Volunteers from all backgrounds and a creative team from different nationalities, make up this community-focused, English-language production.
“This is my first time being on stage and I am loving every minute of it,” says 11-year-old Anna McCavery who plays one of the mice in the production. “My favourite part is dancing and meeting new people. It has been so much fun practising and dressing up in our costumes. I can’t wait for the show!”
