Hoteliers see no immediate fallout to Cyprus tourism sector from Iran crisis

Cyprus’ hotel sector continues to record stable bookings following recent security incidents linked to the conflict with Iran, with the hoteliers association stressing the destination’s resilience.

Speaking to the Cyprus Mail on Tuesday, association president, Thanos Michaelides, said the sector was closely monitoring developments but had so far seen no disruption from either international or domestic travellers.

“At this stage, there are no cancellations and no indications of panic,” Michaelides affirmed.

“Cyprus has proven many times that it is a resilient destination, even when the region is going through difficult periods.”

Michaelides added that hotels remain in constant coordination with tourism authorities and relevant state bodies, with clear communication and preparedness proved key to maintaining confidence among visitors and partners abroad.

“The situation is being managed calmly and professionally,” he said.

“For now, operations continue as normal.”

His comments come amid growing attention following drone activity and a strike at the British bases, incidents that have drawn international media coverage and raised the possibility of economic fallout, particularly for tourism.

Economists caution that while the immediate picture appears stable, it is still too early to assess the full economic impact of the unfolding conflict.

Marios Zachariades, a professor at the University of Cyprus, said on Monday that prolonged instability could affect sentiment among tourists and investors, even if Cyprus itself is not a target.

“Cyprus is close enough to the broader theatre of conflict to cause concern,” he said, adding that uncertainty tends to act as a deterrent, particularly for travellers from outside the region who may be less familiar with local conditions.

“This creates a cloud that will only lift if the conflict ends soon.”

Zachariades further remarked that international reporting of strikes on the British bases, including RAF Akrotiri, could have short-term effects on bookings.

“If the situation de-escalates quickly, demand could rebound,” he said.

“Cyprus still offers relative safety compared to other destinations in the region.”

The government has repeatedly stressed that the republic itself is not a target and that all incidents so far have involved military infrastructure.

Authorities say precautionary measures, including temporary evacuations and adjusted airport operations, were taken to ensure public safety rather than in response to a direct threat against civilians.

Tourism’s importance to the economy adds weight to these concerns.

The sector accounts for around 14 per cent of Cyprus’ gross domestic product following a record year in 2025.

Arrivals surpassed 4.5 million last year, while revenues climbed to a record €3.69 billion, reflecting a strong post-pandemic recovery.

“Cyprus has historically proven a resilient and safe destination, with the tourism sector consistently withstanding external shocks,” Michaelides concluded.
