A New 'Resident Evil' Remake Is Reportedly In Development, and It's Not Code Veronica
Resident Evil Requiem was just released last Friday, receiving widespread critical acclaim and becoming an early Game of the Year contender for 2026. Now that the dust has settled, it's time to look at the future of the series, and, after several leaks and rumors, it seems yet another Resident Evil remake may already be in development at Capcom, in addition to the purported remakes of Code Veronica and Zero.
According to a mostly reliable leaker named Dusk Golem on X, Capcom has allegedly begun the development of a full remake of the original Resident Evil, though it will be a long time before its release.
The information from Dusk Golem came as a result of him discussing why there were alleged cuts to areas that were originally supposed to be in Requiem, including a visit to the iconic mansion from the very first game.
"Likewise, I'm aware that more recently full production on a RE:1 Remake has gotten underway (though years out from time of writing). So, imagine if you will, if RE9 had this Mansion section. Then you do a RE1 Mansion-inspired section again in CVR next," said Dusk Golem.
The original Resident Evil: Code Veronica has a section where players visit a mansion that is similar to the one found in Resident Evil 1. The idea from Dusk Golem is that Capcom may reuse that area for the alleged upcoming remake of Code Veronica again as a foundation for the purported Resident Evil 1 remake.
Rumors are suggesting that a remake of Code Veronica is in active development and may be announced later this year, shooting for a release in 2027. Additionally, it's been rumored that a remake of Resident Evil Zero is also in development and may be targeting a 2028 release.
This new rumor would probably suggest that this alleged remake of Resident Evil 1 is still quite sometime away, releasing in 2029 or later.
The original Resident Evil got a remake in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube and is widely regarded as one of the best remakes and one of the best survival horror games of all time. That remake was then remastered in 2015.
It should be noted that game development changes rapidly, and Capcom has not officially announced any new Resident Evil titles or remakes, so all these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.
