30 Years Ago Today, One of the Most Iconic Songs in R&B History Stormed the Charts
In a moment sure to make millennials feel old, one of the mega R&B hits of the 90s just turned 30 today. The year was 1996, and Bill Clinton was hoping for re-election as President of the United States, the Summer Olympics were to be hosted in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Dallas Cowboys won their last Super Bowl title (rough to think about for Cowboy fans). But when March 4 rolled around that year, British singer, songwriter, and producer Mark Morrison released a track that quickly climbed the charts then, and today remains a song that is almost guaranteed to keep a party going and get the 30-and-over crowd belting to the top of their lungs. So what’s the song?
“Return of the Mack” Turns 30
Written and performed by Morrison, “Return of the Mack” is an infectious R&B hit that instantly draws you in with the uptempo beat and the first “Oh-oh-oh-oh. Come on. Oh yeah.” It clocks in at a little over four and a half minutes and tells the relatable story of a person who was seemingly lied to and cheated on in a previous relationship, but is now ready to take over the dating scene. Hence, the “Return of the Mack.”
Upon its release, it climbed the charts in countries all over the world, even claiming the number one spot in Morrison’s home country, topping both the UK Singles and UK Hip Hop/R&B charts. In the United States, the song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, but peaked at the very top of the US Rhythmic Top 40. Sadly, the classic lacks award hardware. It didn’t even receive a Grammy, American Music Award, or Billboard Music Award nomination.
