Travis Kelce Reportedly Makes Final Decision on Kansas City Chiefs

On Sunday, reports surfaced indicating that Kansas City Chiefs superstar tight end Travis Kelce was "motivated" to play another season in the NFL, though it sounded like the veteran tight end was keeping his options open when it came to which team he would play for.

Obviously, Kelce has spent his entire career with the Chiefs up to this point after he was drafted by Kansas City in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Now, as he enters free agency, it sounds like he's made his decision on whether he will return as a member of the Chiefs, or explore his options with a different team.

Kelce 'Motivated' to Return

On Sunday night, NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that the future Hall of Fame tight end was "motivated" to play another season in the NFL, but based on Russini's report, it sounded like he hadn't ruled out the possibility of playing for a different team.

“Based on conversations with several teams, TE Travis Kelce appears motivated to return to play a 14th season,” Russini wrote in a post on X on Sunday. “The Chiefs remain very much in the mix to re-sign the three-time Super Bowl champion and four-time All-Pro.”

It's not clear which other teams were involved in conversations with Kelce, but it sounds like he was at least exploring the market while keeping the Chiefs "in the mix" to re-sign him to another deal.

Kelce Expected to Take Pay Cut

While it's not clear what would have led Kelce to explore other options outside of Kansas City, the reality is that the superstar tight end will almost certainly be taking a pay cut if he returns to the Chiefs.

Back in 2024, Kelce signed a two-year deal with the team worth $17.125 million per year that made him the highest-paid tight end in the league at the time. However, that deal has now expired, and he is not the same player he was two years ago.

While Kelce still finished the 2025 season with 76 catches for 851 yards with five touchdowns to rank sixth in receptions and fourth in receiving yards among tight ends during the season, it’s still clear that he is not the player he was a few years ago.

He might still be productive, but he’s noticeably less explosive, and it shows up on the stat sheet as the legendary tight end is coming off the two least productive seasons of his entire career. In 2026, he would be a year older and a year deeper into this physical decline.

It's not clear what the Chiefs would be willing to pay Kelce this late in his career, but as NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, there's a chance that Kansas City's offer was less than Kelce expected.

"The truth could be as simple as this — the Chiefs’ current offer falls below Kelce’s expectations. If it doesn’t improve, Kelce could (in theory) see what else is out there. For now, the notion that his agents will listen to other teams could be nothing more than an effort to shake more cash from the Kansas City tree," Florio wrote on Sunday.

Kelce Sticking with the Chiefs

Despite Kelce reportedly exploring other options, it sounds like he will be returning to Kansas City, after all.

On Monday morning, the first day of the NFL's free agency period, ESPN reported that Kelce has informed the Chiefs that he will be returning for a 14th season with the team.

This news comes just two weeks after Chiefs general manager Brett Veach expressed hope that Kelce would return for another season.

"Travis is the best," Veach said at the NFL combine. "He's an icon, and hopefully he comes back. We'll just kind of let that process play out. It's not your typical 27-year-old [and] first time at free agency. Travis has done everything and has accomplished everything.

"He's about to get married. He's got a lot going on, so I don't think there's an element of us not trying to get something done -- you need to have some sort of deadline [or] timeline -- but at the same time he's Travis Kelce."

While the terms of any agreement with the team have not yet been made public, this report should end any speculation about the legendary tight end finishing his career elsewhere.
