Pakistan tells UN Security Council militant groups in Afghanistan threaten global security

Pakistan’s envoy to the United Nations Security Council warned that militant groups operating from Afghanistan pose a threat not only to Pakistan but to the wider region and the world.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said groups such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, Islamic State Khorasan, and Al-Qaeda have found safe havens inside Afghanistan and use them to launch attacks against Pakistan.

He said Islamabad had hoped that the Taliban would become a responsible government after returning to power and help move Afghanistan toward stability and prosperity.

The envoy added that Pakistan had supported Afghanistan through visa facilitation, transit access, and efforts to reintegrate the country into regional and global engagement.

However, he said the Taliban have failed to meet three key expectations from the international community: protecting human rights, forming an inclusive government, and combating terrorism.

Ahmad warned that militant groups operating from Afghanistan have fueled violence in Pakistan, saying 175 Pakistani civilians were killed in attacks last month alone.

Clashes between Pakistani forces and Taliban fighters along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border have intensified in recent weeks, with both sides reporting casualties and cross-border strikes.

The fighting has also caused civilian casualties inside Afghanistan, while both sides claim to have inflicted heavy losses on each other, figures that remain difficult to independently verify.

Pakistan maintains that its cross-border strikes target militant camps linked to the Pakistani Taliban and other groups, warning that the threat emerging from Afghanistan could spread beyond the region if left unchecked.
