Winter Storm Warnings Announced for 5 Feet of Snow, 65 mph Winds

On Tuesday, March 10, winter continues to flex its cold muscles, as eight states have winter storm warnings and watches from the National Weather Service (NWS) expected to bring up to 5 feet of snow, even with spring around the corner.

The NWS has issued new winter storm warnings, watches and advisories across the country, and even though it's already the metrological spring, it sure doesn't feel like it throughout much of the U.S. that's dealing with snow and high winds.

8 States Getting Hit With New Snow, High Winds Up to 5 Feet in Select Areas

States bracing for snow from Tuesday, March 10, going into Friday, March 13, include Oregon, Michigan, Washington, Wisconsin, Montana, Alaska, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Areas of Washington state are bracing for the most snow over the next several days, with up to five feet expected in areas such as Holden Village, Stevens Pass, the Cascades of Snohomish and Whatcom. The lower end of snow in these areas would be one foot, but especially in higher elevations, expect substantially more, according to research from the NWS.

The National Weather Service in Spokane warned to "expect heavy mountain snow Tuesday p.m. through Friday a.m., creating challenging pass travel. Strong winds Wednesday and Thursday. By the weekend, the focus shifts to rising rivers and potential localized flooding in low-lying areas."

In Michigan, up to 9 inches of snow is expected in northern areas of the state and the U.P. In a weather report on Michigan news station TV6, meteorologists note, "There will be a wintry mix along Lake Michigan. Otherwise, moderate to heavy intensities, especially in Marquette County." They also add that snowfall amounts will range from seven to nine inches for the Northern U.P., with around a foot inland in Marquette County.

An 'Active Period' of Weather is Expected Across the U.S., Weather Experts State

The NWS in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, warns that an "active period" of weather is upon us this week. "Strong to severe storms will be possible Tuesday evening," they state on X. "Cold air will then intrude into the region, changing any remaining rain over to a wintry mix and wet snow Wednesday morning."

Meanwhile, South Dakota, Wyoming and Oregon and bracing for several inches of snow but should avoid feet at this point. In Alaska, cold is an issue, with Seward Peninsula getting up to 45 mph to 65 mph winds and wind chills of −50°F.

In the Northeast, the weather experts at AccuWeather tellMen's Journal that a "potent storm" going east is expected to bring "ice buildup" in northern New England and northeastern New York.
