Police investigate scam scheme involving fake Gesy messages
More than €10,000 were stolen from the bank account of a citizen after receiving messages allegedly send by the national health scheme (Gesy), requesting him to update his online profile, police said on Wednesday.
According to the police, the complainant had turned to the police on Wednesday to report the incident which occurred on November 17, 2025.
The complainant said they had received a message purporting to be from Gesy, asking him to edit his bank details and referring him to a website via a link.
They then accessed the website and provided their financial information, supposedly for a payment of 10 euros, in order to be permitted to continue with the renewal of their profile.
After entering the details, the perpetrators withdrew 10,010 euros from their account.
As a measure of protection against online fraud, the police are appealing to citizens to be vigilant, especially when they receive messages containing electronic links.
It is recommended that the public avoid following such links and never enter their personal or banking details on unknown websites.
The police advise that, before proceeding with any online transaction or payment, citizens should verify the relevant information through the organisations’ or companies’ notified communication channels.
Citizens who have declared their banking details through such messages are urged to inform their bank immediately to prevent any illegal use of their details.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
