Cyprus: where tomorrow is unsure

Our island runs on a strange financial logic!

Salaries are modest. Prices keep rising. Yet spending doesn’t slow…

We want. We buy. And somehow, there’s always too much month at the end of our salaries.

There’s that new phone every year. Renovations swallow our savings. Weddings become Hollywood productions. And the summer holiday to Greece always goes ahead – even when the budget seems impossible.

It doesn’t make sense. Cyprus isn’t a rich country. Not by European standards. And yet our rhythm of spending often feels far more extravagant than the numbers would suggest.

Which raises a curious question: if money is limited, why are we behaving as if it isn’t?

The answer may lie in the way we think about security, family, success and tomorrow. Because when researchers looked at financial literacy across Europe, Cyprus was third from the bottom, only just higher than Portugal and Romania…

In 2023, the European Commission measured the basic money skills across the EU, asking simple questions: how interest works, what inflation does to our savings, the relationship between risk and return. The stuff that the Danes (who ranked top) probably learn at their mother’s knee.

The results were fascinating. Across the continent, 26 per cent of people demonstrated a high level of financial knowledge. But in Cyprus, that figure was just 19 per cent. At the same time, 30 per cent of Cypriots fell into the lowest category of financial knowledge, compared with an EU average of around 24 per cent.

Which brings us to something rather interesting. There is, it transpires, a whole new generation of Cypriot youngsters who are actually handling their money well. They’re not economists lecturing from ivory towers. Nor banks trying to sell products.

These are students: young people writing short columns about how money actually works in Cyprus. And their ideas are Really Good.

Now, before you dismiss our youth, just wait!

These are not random opinions. The writers are students studying accounting and finance – they spend their days learning about saving, debt, risk, investment and budgeting. And then they translate their knowledge into practical advice for us – the ordinary people struggling to survive.

More than one of our readers has quietly admitted these columns have helped. None of the advice is complicated. None of it requires a degree in economics. But taken together, it adds up to something Cyprus really needs: money knowledge!

For a nation that’s spent centuries dealing with uncertainty (invasions, occupations, financial crises), these columns are gold! Because, when our tomorrows are unsure, we naturally live for today.

Which brings us, rather neatly, to the weekend weather. Because the island’s skies seem to be following a similar philosophy: uncertain, to say the least!

In Nicosia, Friday arrives with powerful winds and temperatures of 21°C. Saturday starts bright before cloud moves in, holding near 21°C. By Sunday morning rain arrives, dropping temperatures slightly to 19°C, while Monday continues the unsettled pattern with scattered showers and highs of 21°C.

Limassol stays breezy, with a mild but windy Friday at 21°C, followed by a similar Saturday. Sunday brings rain in the morning and gustier conditions, before Monday settles into another showery but mild day near 21°C.

In Larnaca, Friday will be cloudy but warm, reaching 23°C. Winds pick up on Saturday as temperatures drop. And while Sunday brings passing showers, Monday may see conditions stabilise.

Paphos sees the wettest moments of the weekend. Friday is windy with the chance of rain and highs near 21°C. Saturday brings afternoon showers; Sunday turns cooler with more rain possible later in the day; and Monday we can expect further showers.

In Ayia Napa, Friday is mostly cloudy and windy with temperatures around 20°C. Saturday, Sunday and Monday all bring possible afternoon rainfall, with highs around 18–19°C.

Up in Troodos, winter still refuses to let go. Friday mixes cloud and sun with highs around 9°C. Saturday stays cloudy and windy, while Sunday turns colder with a little rain. By Monday things warm slightly to 13°C, though showers remain possible.

In other words, we’re getting a weekend that feels a little like the way we often treat our finances: mostly steady, occasionally unpredictable and best approached with a bit of preparation.

Because the truth is that uncertainty – whether in the weather or our wallets – isn’t going away anytime soon. But learning how to navigate it makes all the difference.

And if a new generation of financially savvy students can help us think a little more clearly about tomorrow, perhaps Cyprus will discover something rather valuable after all: that a little knowledge today can make the future feel a lot more secure.

Weekend weather tips

• Winds will be strong island-wide Friday and Saturday – coastal areas especially.
• Showers appear mainly from Saturday afternoon through Monday.
• Sunday morning looks wettest in several regions.
• Troodos remains cold – close to freezing overnight.
• Plan flexibly – sunshine breaks will appear between the clouds.
