SMITH & TAPSELL TO STEP DOWN FROM U18’s

Royston Town FC can confirm that Roy Smith and Simon Tapsell will be stepping down from their roles as Under 18s Managers at the end of the current season.

Both Roy and Simon have played a vital role in the development of the club’s U18’s programme, overseeing a period of strong performance and, crucially, progression for a number of young players into senior football. The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks for their commitment, hard work, and dedication to the U18’s setup over the past three seasons.

Importantly, Roy and Simon will remain at the club as managers of the Reserves side, where they will continue their excellent work supporting player development and progression through the club’s pathway.

First Team Manager Chris Watters said:

“I’m really pleased that Roy and Simon are continuing in their roles with the Reserves. They’ve done a fantastic job with the U18s and have been a key part of a crucial stage in our player pathway. Their work has helped prepare young players for the demands of senior football, and I’d like to thank them both for their efforts.”

Roy and Simon added:
“During our time with the U18s, the main focus has been on developing players and giving them a pathway into senior football at the club. We’ve had a good number of lads come through Royston Youth into the U18s, with several progressing on to the U23s, and four — Oscar, Joel, Cam and Jake — going on to represent the first team. That’s something we’ve always tried to prioritise, making sure the boys have the opportunity to push on if they’re ready.

On the pitch, we won the league in our first season and have managed to stay competitive after that, finishing in the top three across all three seasons with an outside chance of winning the league again this season.

Overall, it’s been about creating a positive environment where players can improve, enjoy their football, and have a clear route to the next level. As we continue our roles with the Reserves, we’ll still be involved in some capacity and are looking forward to continuing that work and supporting the next group of players coming through.”

The club once again thanks Roy and Simon for their outstanding contribution to the U18’s and looks forward to seeing their continued impact within the Reserves setup.
