Passing of Billy Cathcart
A Career of Distinction
Billy is remembered by the Brandywell faithful as a tough, disciplined full-back. His consistency on the pitch earned him the respect of teammates and opponents alike, and he was frequently cited by club figures as one of the key contributors to the team’s success during a golden era for the club.
Billy ‘Bumper’ was part of the side that lifted the Irish Cup in 1964 and then the Irish League in 1965, City’s only title during the Irish League era. This also saw City experience famous European nights such as the games against FK Lynn and Anderlecht.
Beyond his playing days, Billy remained a lifelong supporter of the club. His legacy at the Brandywell is one of loyalty, professionalism, and a deep-rooted passion. Billy also visited the Brandywell in recent years, some photos below of a visit in 2019.
The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Derry City FC are with Billy’s family and friends at this difficult time.
Rest in Peace, Billy.
