'Data leak of 16 million Kazakhstanis': Ministry of Digital Development issues statement

Tengrinews.kz – The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry has issued a statement regarding reports of a leak of personal data belonging to nearly all Kazakhstani citizens.
What happened
On June 16, information surfaced that 16.3 million records containing personal data of Kazakhstan residents had been leaked into the public domain. This was confirmed by Olzhas Satiev, President of the Center for Analysis and Investigation of Cyberattacks.
In total, more than 16 million records were made publicly accessible, effectively covering a large part of the country’s population. The leaked data reportedly includes: surname, first name, patronymic, gender, date of birth, IIN (individual identification number), address, date of residence registration, phone numbers (mobile, home, work), citizenship, nationality, and other details.
What the ministry says
The ministry stated that it is currently reviewing the information circulating online about the alleged data leak.

“At present, all relevant agencies and services have been engaged. A comprehensive investigation is underway, including verification of the accuracy and relevance of the leaked data. It should be noted that preliminary analysis suggests that most of the data is outdated,” the ministry said.

The ministry also warned that until the investigation is complete, it is premature to draw final conclusions or confirm the authenticity of the information.

“We remind that in similar cases in previous years, the leaked data was found to be outdated and sourced from various service sector and microfinance organization databases. The ministry is monitoring the situation closely. Additional information will be released after the investigation is concluded,” the ministry added.

As a reminder, the leaked personal data includes: surname, first name, patronymic, gender, date of birth, IIN, address, date of residence registration, phone numbers (mobile, home, work), citizenship, nationality, and some other details.
