Kazakh blogger under investigation in China after public prank videos spark backlash

Tengrinews.kz – A Kazakh content creator has drawn the attention of Chinese authorities after filming controversial social experiment videos in public places in Guangzhou.
According to Chinese outlet Sohu, the blogger staged a series of provocative stunts to test a popular claim circulating online that “there is no theft in China”. In one video, she and an accomplice acted out a fake pickpocketing scene in the subway, offering a phone to random bystanders and later accusing them of theft.
She also approached strangers on the street, grabbing men by the hands or placing her hand on one man’s thigh - actions that alarmed passersby. In another scene, she pressed her shoulder against a woman, startling her. Although presented as “social experiments,” many Chinese viewers considered her actions borderline sexual harassment, which is prohibited under China’s Law on the Protection of Women’s Rights.
Authorities say the blogger filmed the videos without consent, caused public disturbances, and made false public accusations, potentially violating administrative, civil, and criminal laws.

In response, Chinese platforms have blocked her accounts and removed the videos. Police in Guangzhou have reportedly launched an investigation.
The blogger has since deleted the videos from her own social media accounts.
