Video: Max Dowman stars for Arsenal in 3-2 friendly win vs Newcastle United
Arsenal secured a 3-2 win over Newcastle United in Sunday’s friendly in Singapore.
The Gunners started their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 victory over AC Milan this week, and continued the winning run by beating the Magpies at the Singapore National Stadium.
Mikel Merino, Alex Murphy (own goal) and Martin Odegaard sealed the comeback victory for the Gunners, but it was Max Dowman, who made the headlines in the second half.
Dowman came on just after the hour mark and immediately had a bloody nose from a Joelinton hand. However, the youngster was unfazed by the incident and induced two splendid saves.
Nick Pope and John Ruddy denied the 15-year-old from finding the back of the net. The youngster eventually got one back on Joelinton by winning a late penalty for the Gunners.
Dowman made a terrific lung-bursting run from the right flank before Joelinton brought him down in the box. Odegaard netted the spot kick to secure a 3-2 win for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Dowman has already made a big impression while training with the first-team squad. Some Arsenal stars are reportedly ‘marvelling at his football brain‘ and how quickly he executes what he is told.
He has yet to make his senior competitive debut under manager Arteta. Age restrictions prevented it from happening last term, but the Spanish tactician should unleash the youngster this campaign.
Arsenal are scheduled to face Tottenham Hotspur at the Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong on July 31. It will be the first-ever north London derby to take place outside of the United Kingdom.
Dowman has played as a right-sided winger in his first two friendly appearances. The youngster may not start, but will definitely get more valuable minutes to showcase his immense talent.
It remains to be seen whether Cristhian Mosquera and Viktor Gyokeres make their non-competitive debuts. The latter was in the stands today, having just signed from Sporting CP.
