ChatGPT launches study mode to promote deeper thinking
The newly launched feature guides users through problems using step-by-step explanations, interactive hints, and adaptive questions based on the learner’s goals and level of knowledge. Instead of offering immediate solutions, ChatGPT now acts more like a tutor — encouraging critical thinking and reflection.
Starting July 30, study mode is available to all logged-in users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. It will also roll out to ChatGPT Edu users in the coming weeks.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT has already become a widely used tool among students globally — from test preparation to mastering complex subjects. However, educators have raised concerns about whether the tool fosters true learning or merely speeds up answer-finding. Study mode is designed to address this, aiming to spark curiosity and promote independent thinking.
"Instead of doing the work for students, study mode encourages critical thinking. These types of tools are a major step toward responsible and effective use of AI in education," said Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media.
How it works
The mode was developed in collaboration with educators, researchers, and learning scientists. It incorporates evidence-based strategies like structured guidance, cognitive load management, and personalized support.
Currently, study mode relies on preset instructions that can be quickly iterated based on user feedback. In the future, OpenAI plans to integrate these features directly into its core models, with additional capabilities such as progress tracking, goal setting, and enhanced visualization tools for complex topics.
There’s also speculation among users that group learning features may be introduced later, potentially allowing multiple users to collaborate in educational chat sessions.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously reminded users that ChatGPT conversations are not confidential and can be used in legal proceedings. Unlike interactions with certified professionals such as doctors or lawyers, AI chats do not carry legal privileges.
