Arsenal suffer new setback as key player's return is pushed back
Arsenal will be without Kai Havertz for a little while longer following a fresh setback in his recovery process.
According to The Daily Mail, the attacker will now be sidelined until early to mid-January. The German international experienced an issue last month while recovering from minor knee surgery.
That issue has delayed his expected return to full fitness for Mikel Arteta’s side. Havertz has not featured for Arsenal since August 17, 2025, and his absence has now extended to several months.
Arteta had hoped to welcome the forward back over the holiday season fixtures, but plans have now changed. The 26-year-old was close to returning before the latest setback disrupted his progress.
Rehabilitation setback alters return plans
In November, Havertz was just one week away from making a matchday squad. He was training well and edging closer to full involvement with the first team.
However, an issue picked up during his final training sessions forced another pause. Since then, Havertz has not returned to full training with the rest of the squad.
He could be included in the squad for the Premier League fixture against Liverpool on 08 January 2026. That match remains a possible target if his recovery continues without further problems.
A more realistic return could come in the FA Cup third round against Portsmouth – that fixture is scheduled three days after the Liverpool match.
Arsenal injury issues continue to test depth
Havertz has struggled with fitness problems throughout the year. He previously tore his hamstring during Arsenal’s warm-weather camp in February last season.
Several key players have spent time on the sidelines this season; however, there has been some relief this month with the return of important squad members.
Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Gabriel Jesus and William Saliba have all come back. Their returns have helped Arteta manage a demanding run of matches.
Cristhian Mosquera continues his recovery and remains unavailable. Gabriel Magalhaes is also sidelined as he works his way back to fitness. Ben White has recently joined the injury list, adding to Arteta’s concerns.
The North London club are determined to keep up their title challenge, and players returning from injury will help them maintain their lead at the top of the table in the second half of the season.
