La figura del campesino humilde, cuya vida marcada por la pobreza lo orilló a inmiscuirse en el tráfico de narcóticos, poco a poco va desapareciendo del hampa mexicano. Actualmente, son adultos jóvenes con preparación académica, bilingües y millonarios quienes encabezan las organizaciones delictivas más peligrosas y poderosas del país

A inicios del siglo XX, Enrique Fernández Puerta, El Al Capone de Juárez; Ignacia La Nacha Jasso o Pablo González, El Pablote, comenzaron a trazar las primeras rutas de contrabando de narcóticos a EU en la frontera norte de México.La adormidera obtenida de las flores de la amapola era el principal negocio ante la alta demanda de morfina que la Segunda Guerra Mundial había dejado en el vecino país del norte.

El panorama estadunidense de los años 30 también favoreció al tamaulipeco Juan Nepomuceno Guerra en el noreste de México quien, siguiendo los pasos de su mentor Virgilio Barrera, hizo de dicha parte de la frontera un corredor constante, primero de bebidas alcohólicas, y posteriormente de mariguana y opio.

A esta primera generación de narcos en México se sumaron sinaloenses como Pedro Avilés,El León de la Sierra, Lamberto Quintero o Juan Manuel Salcido Uzeta alias El Cochiloco, cuyas operaciones de trasiego de drogas también comenzaron con la mariguana y la amapola que crecía sin dificultad entre las montañas del Triángulo Dorado.Desde entonces, sus pantalones de algodón y camisas sencillas, sus sombreros, sus botas y sus hazañas eran retratados en composiciones que grupos locales difundían o, en otros casos, desde la voz de grandes exponentes de la música ranchera, como Antonio Aguilar.

El cannabis, la adormidera y la hoja de coca cambiaron la historia de México.Según el historiador Carlos Pérez Ricart, las prohibiciones generaron los mercados ilegales que dieron origen al narcotráfico.
