"I can guarantee": Romano says Arsenal are planning three signings including younger right-back
Arsenal are planning at least three signings during the summer transfer window, according to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners spent more than £250 million on eight players last summer, and there could be another spending spree when the season concludes.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that the Premier League leaders are poised to pursue a new midfielder when the transfer window reopens.
He added that the Gunners could also target a younger right-back and winger.
Romano said: “One thing I can guarantee is that Arsenal will work on eventually midfielders in the summer.
“Arsenal are looking at some options but I can tell you that one of the priorities in the summer transfer window could be to add a younger right back to the squad.
“Arsenal are considering to do something in midfield but could also focus in the right-back position and also on the winger position, so Arsenal are going to be active during the summer transfer window.”
Arsenal preparing for busy summer ahead
The Gunners suffered a big blow before the winter transfer deadline, with Mikel Merino suffering a serious foot injury. The club explored midfielders in the transfer market but did not pursue anyone.
Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali was mentioned as a surprise late target, but nothing materialised. His agent personally offered him to the Gunners, but a mid-season deal was never on the cards.
Arsenal could return for the highly-rated Italy international in the next transfer window.
Looking at possible winger options, Tonali’s teammate, Anthony Gordon, could be a target.
The former Everton man has been on the Gunners’ radar for a while, and it has just been reported that he could be prised away for around £75 million and £80 million prior to next season.
Gordon’s arrival could coincide with one of Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli heading for the exit door. Meanwhile, the Gunners could part ways with Ben White to land a younger right-back.
White has been largely out of contention for a starting role due to fierce competition from Jurrien Timber and his own fitness concerns. The club could decide to recoup some of the fee spent on him.
There are no standout targets for the role. Sporting director Andrea Berta could be tasked with securing a cost-effective solution, such as Cristhian Mosquera, who has been fantastic for the club.
