Epiphany bathing: where and when to take a dip in Astana
Tengrinews.kz — On January 18–19, celebrations of the Orthodox Epiphany will take place in all Orthodox churches in Astana, the city administration reported.
In the capital, Epiphany ice swimming will be organized at the city beach along the embankment of Capital Park (near the Amphitheater). Four ice holes will be prepared for participants.
Note: Epiphany bathing is a tradition associated with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which Christians celebrate on January 19. On this day, many people immerse themselves in icy water, symbolizing purification and renewal. It is believed that the water on Epiphany has special power and helps strengthen health. The immersion usually takes place in an ice hole cut into a frozen body of water. Today, however, it is not only a religious ritual but also a form of physical hardening. Many people take part in the ice swimming even if they are not religious, viewing it as a good tradition for health and vitality.
The swimming areas will be open from 8:00 p.m. on January 18, after the blessing of the water, until 2:00 a.m. on January 19. Mass ice swimming will continue from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on January 19.
Water rescue services of the Emergency Department and officers of the Astana Police Department will ensure safety at the site. Ambulance crews will also be on duty.
“It is important to observe safety rules at designated swimming areas: no more than three people should be near an ice hole at a time; entering the water should be done only under the supervision of rescuers and medical staff. Before entering the water, participants are advised to warm up. After the ritual, it is recommended to dry off with a towel, put on warm clothes, and drink hot tea. If any deterioration in health occurs, participants should immediately contact medical personnel on duty,” the Astana city administration reminded.
Safety precautions:
do not swim in unequipped areas without rescuers and medical staff;
do not leave children unattended, even if they are confident swimmers;
do not dive from the ice — this is dangerous;
avoid alcohol to prevent hypothermia and other risks.
Swimming in unauthorized areas carries a fine of 7 MCI (30,725 tenge) under Article 412 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. Drinking alcohol or appearing intoxicated at swimming sites is punishable by a fine of 5 MCI (about 21,625 tenge) under Article 440 of the Code.
