'Diplomatic innovation': Tokayev highlights Trump’s role in the Abraham Accords
Tengrinews.kz – President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev mentioned US President Donald Trump during his speech at the 5th meeting of the National Kurultai.
Tokayev noted that the world has witnessed the emergence of completely new phenomena, to which everyone, including future generations, will have to adapt. According to the President, what recently seemed incredible or impossible is becoming a familiar norm and even everyday reality.
“Before our eyes, international law is being eroded. The crisis of trust on the international stage is deepening. Global military spending has reached a record level of about three trillion dollars, and by 2035 this figure may double. Growing militarization undermines the efforts of the international community to build a just world order,” the President said.
Tokayev emphasized that in such conditions the importance of foreign policy increases, and it must be as balanced as possible, aimed at protecting and promoting the strategic interests of our state.
In the President’s view, in diplomacy the price of a wrong decision is so high that it can cause irreparable damage to the long-term interests of the state.
“We know this from our own experience. In the economy, one program or concept can be replaced by other policy documents, which, unfortunately, often happens here, but signatures on international treaties cannot be revoked. What is written with a pen cannot be cut down with an axe,” Tokayev noted.
He added that diplomacy is the most important and irreplaceable tool for achieving compromise and consensus. In Tokayev’s view, any conflict can be overcome if there is genuine will and proper professionalism.
The Head of State recalled his decision to accede to the Abraham Accords. In this context, he mentioned US President Donald Trump:
“The very emergence of such agreements is a diplomatic innovation stemming from President Trump’s deep understanding of the historical context and current political realities. I am confident in the correctness of the decision to become a party to the Abraham Accords, which are intended to promote the establishment of lasting peace in the Middle East,” Tokayev said.
He added that the essence of this Agreement is reflected, among other things, in its name.
“Abraham, or Ibrahim, is a prophet in the history of religions, equally revered by followers of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Our country must rely on values that unite all humankind. We stand for peace between people of different nations and religions,” the President said.
He stressed that precisely for these reasons Kazakhstan’s accession to the Abraham Accords is of particular importance and will help strengthen the international standing of Kazakhstan.
