Northern governors speak out against Igbo quit notice as El-Rufai orders arrest of Arewa youths - Newspaper Review

- Federal government of Nigeria has kicked against the eviction notice issued to Igbos in the North by Arewa youths

The Nation reports that the federal government last night warned Nigerians against making statements capable of undermining the country’s peace and security.

The warning came after the ultimatum issued by some youth groups in the North for the Igbo to leave by October or face a mass action.

They also informed northerners living in the East to return home.

The signatories to the declaration by the group are: Nastura Ashir Sharif of Arewa Citizens Action For Change; Shettima Yerima of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum; Aminu Adam of Arewa Youth Development Foundation; Alfred Solomon of Arewa Students Forum; Abdul-Azeez Suleiman of Northern Emancipation Network; Joshua Viashman of Northern Youth Vanguard; Mohammad A. Mohammad of Northern Youth Stakeholders Forum; Mohammed Tasiu Pantami of North East Assembly and Nathaniel Ajegena Adigizi of North Central People’s Front.

This Day reports that the governors of the 19 Northern states disowned the coalition of Arewa youths who issued ultimatum to Igbos to vacate the Northern part of Nigeria within three months or be forced to leave.

Borno state governor and chairman of the NNGF, Kashim Shettima, spoke on behalf of his colleagues in Maiduguri yesterday evening.

The governors said they were in touch with heads of their security agencies and had taken measures that will guarantee the rights of all Nigerians to live in any of the 19 states in the three geo-political zones within the North.

The governors also called on the security agencies to arrest the youths and probe the motive behind the call, saying the call by the youths was a “suspicious act that falls in line with recent the trend of arms smuggling and coup rumours, which may not be coincidental”.

According to Vanguard, Governor Nasir El Rufai has directed the Nigeria Police Force to immediately arrest all signatories to the so called Kaduna declaration, giving a three month ultimatum to the Igbo leave the northern part of the country.

Similarly, the governor has equally directed his Attorney General and commissioner for Justice to prepare charges of incitement against leaders of the group.

The Guardian reports that Middle Belt Youth Council offered to accommodate Igbo sent away from northern states.

Meanwhile, The Punch reports that activities at the Lagos House, Ikeja, was paralysed for a few hours on Wednesday as parents of kidnapped pupils of the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe, protested against the alleged indifference of the state government towards the plight of the pupils who had spent 14 days in kidnappers’ den.

The protesters refused to leave Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s office, demanding the rescue of their children with immediate effect.
