Annabelle Wallis ‘convinced’ Tom Cruise to let her run with him in The Mummy: ‘I wanted to show him I could do the same’
Tom Cruise fans may have noticed a recurring element in all of his big-screen blockbusters: he likes to run.
But it seems that the Hollywood actor doesn’t like to let his co-stars in on the action, preferring to sprint solo in every film from Mission Impossible to Vanilla Sky.
British actress Annabelle Wallis managed to buck the trend in brand new action film The Mummy, convincing Cruise to let her run beside him after she showed him how fast she was.
“I was adamant that I was going to run on screen with him because he’s so particular about his running,” she told the Standard.
“He was like ‘Annabelle, nobody runs on screen with me’ and I said ‘Tom, I’m a really good runner.’”
The 32-year-old rising star, who plays archaeologist Jenny Halsey in the reboot of the monster movie franchise, even managed to beat the A-lister after challenging him to a race in between takes.
“I was so cheeky with him that I said ‘Come on, I’ll run through the studio with you and beat you’ and, oh my God, I did,” she said.
“But then he has this turbo button and as he sees you creeping up he does not like it and he powers on through.”
Wallis says Cruise “added in” scenes in which the pair sprint side by side through the Natural History Museum and out onto the streets on London after he discovered her skill.
“He added all those running bits because when he saw me he said ‘Wow, you run really well,’” she said.
“I wanted to do the same and I was like I can do the same and I want to show Tom Cruise that I can do the same.”
Cruise plays US soldier Nick Morton who inadvertently sets free an evil Egyptian deity while attempting to steal treasure from a sealed tomb.
The big-budget film co-stars Russell Crowe and Sofia Boutella and is the beginning of a new franchise of ‘dark universe’ films.
Wallis, who starred alongside Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in The Tudors, admitted that she’s been waiting to land an action role.
“I grew up a tomboy. I rode motorcycles, I played paintball. I’m very physical naturally and I knew I wanted to get into the action space because I naturally feel comfortable there,” she said.
“When I was on set I realised that you just can, you take yourself to the next level.”
The Mummy is in cinemas nationwide on June 9.
