‘Ain’t Too Proud’ to sing along at Berkeley Rep
Obviously, the main reason to catch “Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations” is the music. The world premiere musical, now in previews at Berkeley Rep, features not just hits from the legendary quintet but also from throughout the Motown catalog: “Just My Imagination” and “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted,” “I Can’t Get Next To You” and “War.”
If those titles alone are enough to make you start humming, the show only encourages that, says playwright Dominique Morisseau in an interview in the show’s playbill. “It’s gonna demand that you sing along!”
You can’t tell the group’s story without getting into politics, Morisseau adds.
