Boeing Facing Probe Over Accounting For Dreamliner, 747 Jet, Report Says

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is reportedly investigating whether Boeing Co. properly accounted for the costs and expected sales of two of its best-known jetliners, the 787 Dreamliner and the 747 jumbo aircraft, according to anonymous sources who spoke to Bloomberg.

IT'S OFFICIAL: Global stocks are in a bear market

That's it: Global stocks are officially in a bear market.

On Thursday, the MSCI all-country world index closed down 20% from its recent high to meet that technical definition.

The index tracks large and mid-cap stock performance across 23 developed and 23 emerging countries. It peaked last May but fell about 1% on Thursday.

We'd note that the index had touched bear-market territory, but it has now closed down more than 20% from its peak.

Obama plans to nominate King as education secretary

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will nominate Dr. John B. King Jr. to serve as Education Department secretary after receiving commitments from lawmakers to give his nomination speedy consideration, the White House said Thursday. "For proper accountability, especially as we work with the administration on implementing the new law governing elementary and secondary education, it is important to have in charge of the department a member of the president's cabinet confirmed by the United States Senate," Alexander said.

Stocks could be setting up for a huge squeeze

Markets are approaching extreme levels, observes a trade note from the Morgan Stanley futures desk, and it is hedge funds that have been selling this stock market in a big way and a  massive short squeeze could be approaching. The bank’s futures desk “Pain Trade Monitor,” meanwhile, points to relative value opportunities in derivatives and a potential short term bounce. Activision Blizzard shares fall more than 15% on earnings, outlook

Activision Blizzard Inc. shares dropped in the extended session Thursday after the video-game publisher's quarterly results and outlook fell short of Wall Street expectations. Activision shares plunged 16% to $25.68 after hours. The company reported adjusted fourth-quarter earnings of 83 cents a share on revenue of $2.12 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast 86 cents a share on revenue of $2.2 billion. The company forecast adjusted first-quarter earnings of 11 cents a share on revenue of $800 million... AIG swings to fourth-quarter operating loss

American International Group Inc. late Thursday reported it swung to a fourth-quarter operating loss of $1.3 billion, or $1.10 a share, from an operating income of $1.4 billion, or 97 cents a share, in the year ago period. Operating income is a closely watched metric in the industry that excludes investment gains or losses. The company also reported a net loss of $1.8 billion, or $1.50 a share, compared with a net profit of $644 million, or 46 cents a share, a year earlier.
