The Front Row: “Marie Antoinette”

For her third feature, “Marie Antoinette,” from 2006 (which I discuss in this clip), Sofia Coppola took the daring step—after her adaptation of “The Virgin Suicides” and the inward journey of “Lost in Translation”—of reconstructing one of the most familiar and stereotyped characters in history, along with her lavishly artificial habitat. But Coppola’s bold leap of scale, design, and time is utterly logical, as her subsequent films have shown. Her great theme is subjectivity—women’s subjectivity—and... Читать дальше...

Dolphins’ Tannehill says he’s ready to ‘demand excellence’

DAVIE, Fla. — New dad Ryan Tannehill is ready to take charge and scold when necessary, even in public, because he knows whatever happens reflects on him. As a quarterback, that is. Tannehill’s 2-week-old son might not need reprimanding yet, but the perennially problematic Miami Dolphins offense does. And at the urging of new coach

AP Photo/Frank Franklin II

But after selling itself to Verizon, Yahoo's in cost-cutting mode now, and the company's likely done buying anything for a while.

The clearest indication of Yahoo putting a stop to Mayer's famous buying spree could be seen in its latest 10-Q filing.

The "Risk Factors" section discussing acquisitions... Читать дальше...

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Donald Glover says his decision to not return to “Community” for its series finale on Yahoo! wasn’t a reflection of his time on the show. “I just like endings,” he said Tuesday at an annual summer press event for TV critics. “I think everything should have death clauses in them,” he

The new 'Mafia' game thrusts players into New Orleans during the Civil Rights struggle

Hangar 13

Video games have taken us to so many different times and places throughout history, from Renaissance Italy, to the beaches of Normandy (many, many times), all the way to the cocaine-fueled beaches of 1980s Miami.

But one setting that big-budget games have generally avoided is the American South during the civil rights struggle. It would undoubtedly be an enormous challenge to depict such a tumultuous time in history with sensitivity, and games have had trouble with race before. Читать дальше...

23 incredible tiny homes from around the world

Facebook/Ecocapsule

Small spaces are the next big thing in real estate, and with good reason.

Real estate is constantly getting more expensive, and we're facing overpopulation and environmental damage. Tiny homes can help solve these issues, but many also prefer them to traditional housing because they're the perfect hybrid of comfort and convenience, since they are often mobile.

On roofs, wheels, and in backyard, here are 23 of the smallest homes we could find around the world. Читать дальше...

The water in the Olympic diving pool turned green, but nobody knows why

NBC

The Olympic women's synchronized 10-meter diving final is underway from Rio on Tuesday, where the water in the diving pool has inexplicably turned an unsettling shade of green.

Yesterday, the diving pool was a normal shade of blue — the same color as the other pools we've seen in the Olympics. Perhaps most odd of all, the water in the water-polo pool just across the pool deck remains a normal-looking blue.

British diver Tom Daley, who won bronze on Monday, tweeted a picture... Читать дальше...

Opera performers sing for your dinner

If Broadway has dinner theater — that age-old combo of musical performance and fine dining — then why should the operatic world be left out? Billed as an “operatic variety show,” this presentation includes dinner from Canvas Underground, the network of private supper clubs. Along with the food comes a variety of operatic excerpts sung by the organizers, soprano Sarah Fletcher and bass-baritone Andrew J. Chung, along with mezzo-soprano Claire MacKenzie and tenors Sudeep Srivastava and Gustavo Hernandez.

Lochte finally gets out of his room and into Olympic pool

RIO DE JANEIRO — Ryan Lochte was tired of sitting around his room in the Olympic athletes’ village and watching his U.S. teammates in the pool. He was raring to get racing. Austin Seferian-Jenkins: Getting kicked out of practice was “a wake-up call”

When the Buccaneers drafted tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins in the second round of the 2014 draft, they hoped that his mixture of size and speed would make him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. Through two seasons, though, Seferian-Jenkins hasn’t had that kind of impact. Injuries have kept him off the field for half the…
