Two sons take two views of their Nazi fathers
What starts out as a genial documentary about two sons of high officials of the Nazi Party soon turns chilling in the gripping and compelling “What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy.”
Philippe Sands, a human rights attorney and the film’s writer, is a Jew who lost most of his family during the Holocaust.
Horst von Wachter had what he considered a happy childhood, As the movie opens, he talks lovingly about his former life before it all came crashing to an end after the war.
Both men’s family photos and home movies are used judiciously throughout the film.
Despite indisputable evidence, von Wachter goes into complete denial, saying his father, Otto von Wachter, had nothing to do with the exterminations and if anything tried to stop them.
