'Footballers and beef burgers don't mix' - West Ham chief David Gold slams Benni McCarthy over sexist comments
West Ham co-chairman David Gold has hit back at former striker Benni McCarthy after the player made sexist comments about Karren Brady.
The South African forward made only two Premier League starts for West Ham in just over a year up to 2011 and never scored a goal at what would be his final European football club.
McCarthy suggested that Brady, the club’s vice-chairman, had been at least partly responsible for his struggles at West Ham and suggested that the Baroness, who became managing director of Birmingham City at just 23 years of age, should not be involved in the sport.
He told French publication So Foot: “I saw so many things in my life and in football for me, it was nothing. Woman and football, it's not such a good combination.”
When these comments were brought to the attention of Gold, who along with co-owner David Sullivan gave Brady her first job in the sport, he hit back in belligerent fashion.

Brady had labelled McCarthy a “big fat mistake” in a 2011 column for the Sun, in which she also said: “Rather than the super scorer we hoped for, we acquired a super-size, a player devoted to filling his belly more than filling the net.”
In his interview with So Foot McCarthy had admitted that he had struggled to find his best shape at West Ham but claimed that he was not given the games required to regain match sharpness.
