The EU on February 11 pledged the sum of $50 million in support of Nigeria’s current struggle against insurgency attacks, and the attendant problems associated with providing for internally displaced persons and other victims of various attacks in the nation.
The announcement was made at the Aso Rock villa during a meeting between the German president Joachim Gauck and President Muhammadu Buhari.
President Gauck held that the EU had resolved to join forces with the Buhari administration in its ongoing fight against terrorism in the nation, as well as neighbouring countries and the African Union.
Speaking further, Mr. Gauck said it was Germany’s intentions to see a peaceful Nigeria under the reign of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said: “We as Europe will support that initiative with $50 million. We commend your good governance.
“Good governance is not possible without peace, Germany will support Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram and we would continue to provide support for the displaced people on a humanitarian basis.”
On the issue of helping return funds illegally stashed in Germany, Mr. Gauck said Nigeria could adopt same approach Germany adopted a while back when they were faced with a similar problem.
He added that Germany used illegal sources to trace information needed to fast track the process which helped them recover funds stolen from the nation.
The German president also lauded the freedom of the press in Nigeria adding that Nigerians have shown determination to make a change in the system.
