When Saint Valentine’s Day is associated with romantic love and happiness but the city of Banda Aceh, located on the island of Sumatra, prohibited its residents from celebrating the festival.

Locals are not allowed to present greeting cards, sweets or flowers to celebrate the day of love. Moreover, the city’s mayor, Illiza Saaduddin Djamal, warned that police officers will patrol the city to prevent violations and re-educate the amorous dissenters.

The city’s mayor, Illiza Saaduddin Djamal said: “Our society and the Muslim youth should certainly not be celebrating non-Islamic holidays. The law says it is haram. The government is obliged to protect the public and younger generation from unlawful acts.”
Non-Muslims caught in the act will be able to choose whether they want to be tried under sharia law or the regular Indonesian criminal code. The religion of the majority of the Aceh population is Islam, with minorities including Buddhists, Christians and Hindus.

Aceh is the only province in the Muslim-dominated country to adhere to sharia, the law of Islam. It deals with all aspects of day-to-day life, including politics, economics, banking, business law, contract law, sexuality, and social issues.

Earlier last year, the Banda Aceh city administration banned New Year’s Eve celebrations, one of its districts adopted the law requiring single-gender education, and another banned women from straddling motorcycles when riding with a driver.
St. Valentine’s day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country.
