YFT: 15 Etiquettes of Salaatul Jumuah

– Friday which is called Yaomul Jumuah in Arabic is a day every Muslim looks forward to every week.

– The etiquettes of Salaatul Jumuah are many and it is important all male and female Muslims to know about some of these etiquettes.

There are so many ways in which Muslims relate to the weekly Friday prayer (Salaatul Jumuah) and it is advisable each male and female gender know about them

1. Body cleanliness

It is a normal routine for Muslims to wash some specific parts of their body before going into the Masjid (Mosque) for their 5 daily prayers as well as Salaatul Jumuah. However, purifying and cleaning oneself for Salaatul Jumuah includes a spiritual bath called Ghuslul Jumuah. It is highly encouraged to take this bath which involves washing all the body parts by following a prescribed pattern.

2. Using fragrance and perfume

Only males are allowed to use perfumes in Islam. The wisdom behind this is explained by Prophet Muhammad (peace upon his noble soul) as explained in his Hadith in Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi as follows: “Any woman who puts on perfume and passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance is an adultress.”

3. Being punctual to the Masjid

There is a common saying that punctuality is the watchword of business. There is a great reward for going early to the Masjid every Yaomul Jumuah right before the Imaam mounts the Pulpit to deliver the Khutbah (sermon).

4. Putting on the best cloths

A Muslim is advised to put on his best attire whenever he is going for Salaatul Jumuah. This is because Yaomul Jumuah is also a day of festivity for all Muslims.

5. Offering supplications to Allah

Muslims are enjoined to seek Allah’s divine help in whatever they need. This is because there is a special time that Muslims are urged to supplicate to Allah on Yaomul Jumuah in which Allah accepts all supplications. Some Muslim scholars say the time is between Salaatul Asr and Salaatul Maghrib.

6. Reciting Suuratul Kahf

Suuratul Kahf is chapter 18 of the Glorious Qur’an. The word Kahf translates to Cave in English language. The chapter can be read at any time on Yaomul Jumuah but before sunset. There is a saying credited to the Prophet of Allah that whosoever recites Suuratul Kahf on Yaomul Jumuah, Almighty Allah will illuminate his life with His Light between 2 Fridays.

7. Trekking to the Masjid

If it is possible to take a walk to the Masjid for Salaatul Jumuah, it is advisable. This is because a Muslim is rewarded by Allah for every step he takes to the Masjid.

8. Going to the Masjid in spirit of tranquility

It is not in the character of a true Muslim to rush whatever he does or takes a decision. When a Muslim is going to the Masjid or for Salaatul Jumuah, it is important he is calm and does not walk in a hurried manner.

9. Observing at least 2 Rakaa’h of Nawaafil

The Naafil or Nawaafil (plural form of Naafil) are the prayers that are not obligatory upon the Muslims but are supererogatory prayers. The Naafil or Nawaafil a Muslim observes when he first enters a Masjid is called Tahiyyatul Masjid.

The Messenger of Allah in one of his sayings said: “If one of you enters the Masjid, do not sit until you pray 2 Rakaa’h.”  This Hadith can be found in Bukhari and Muslim.

10. Avoid interrupting people in the Masjid

It is wrong for a Muslim when he enters the Masjid to be dividing or separating people who are sitting in the Masjid calmly. This is because the people may lose concentration in listening attentively to the Khutbah (sermon) the Imam is delivering.

11. Avoid taking over people’s space

A Muslim should not sit at a space occupied by someone else just because the person went out briefly from the Masjid. If a person is sitting at a particular space and puts something to indicate he was there, someone should find an unoccupied space and sit down there quietly instead of the person’s space.

12. Avoid making sounds with the hands

It is not good to clasp someone’s hands or intertwine the fingers while the Imaam is delivering the Khutbah.

13. Sitting at the front row

Someone should try as much as possible to sit at the front row very close to the Imam. The Messenger of Allah said that men are advised to sit at the front row because the first row is the best row for males, while females are to sit at the rear row.

14. Avoid talking or making a noise inside the Masjid

A Muslim should be quiet while the Imaam is delivering the Khutbah. This also includes listening to the Imaam and not playing with anything or talking with anybody while the Imaam is delivering the Khutbah.

15. Avoiding all sorts of Bidi’ah (innovations)

Some Muslims engage in acts of Bidi’ah like reciting the Glorious Qur’an and observing Nawaafil while the Imaam is delivering. All these are acts of worship which are done at the wrong time. There is no act of worship while the Imaam is delivering the Khutbah than to listen to the Khutbah with full attention.
