Paddle boarder reports seeing whale near Sausalito
Kevin Craford, 34, was paddle boarding with a friend heading from Cavallo Point to Bar Bocce in Sausalito on Saturday when he spotted a dorsal fin around 1:30 p.m.
The animal broke the surface of the water and let out a jet of vapor from its blow hole before submerging and popping up a second time.
While it wasn’t clear what type of whale it was, marine officials say if it was a gray whale, the animal sighting is right on schedule for the seasonal pit stop in the bay the migratory mammals make on the way back to the arctic.
“Every year starting around this time, we do have gray whales wandering into San Francisco Bay and into Tamales Bay,” said Mary Jane Schramm of the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.
Gray whales do not have dorsal fins.
