ACE trains resume service after East Bay derailment
Altamont Corridor Express trains resumed service on Wednesday morning, two days after a train derailed in Niles Canyon east of Fremont, injuring 9 people.
The trains were moving slowly though the corridor, where around 7:30 p.m. Monday, a large section of earth and trees heaved down a steep mountainside, covered the tracks and sent two of five cars off the rails.
ACE officials told passengers to expect delays as trains moved around 10 mph through the freshly cleared section of track and workers meticulously inspected the rails.
Crews with Union Pacific, the agency that operates the railroad track, worked throughout the day Tuesday to clear the wrecked train.
Rescuers on Monday punched out the train’s windows and scrambled to pull injured passengers to safety amid a chaotic scene.
