When Dr. Michael Roberts first arrived in Phoenix in 1995 to join a few other doctors at a small oncology practice, the only medical school in the state was a three-hour drive away, in Tucson. Phoenix itself was home to two teaching hospitals, Good Samaritan and St. Joseph’s, and roughly three dozen oncologists, Roberts recalled.
