Looters in trouble as Senate makes vital decision
– Senate to pass bill that will allow looters in foreign countries to be repatriated
– This is to support President Buhari’s fight against corruption
The Nigerian Senate has thrown its weight behind President Muhammadu Buhariin in his determination to prosecute corrupt officials by passing a bill that will enable Nigerian looters in other countries to be repatriated and prosecuted.
According to The Nation, the executive bill is entitled: “A Bill for an Act to make provision for mutual assistance in criminal matters between Nigeria and other foreign states and for related matters, 2016”

The Senate on March 9 passed for third reading and possible passage into law the bill and the debate was led by Mohammed Ali Ndume, the Senate leader.
After a brief debate, it was referred to the Senate committees on judiciary, foreign affairs and anti-corruption for further legislative consideration.
A report is expected from the two weeks after two weeks following a public hearing.
in his debate Ndume said that in a bid to strengthen President Buhari’s stance on corruption, the legislation will fast-track the prosecution of Nigerians and their accomplices fleeing abroad with loots from the country.

Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah who is the deputy leader of the Senate urged the Senate to support the passage of the bill.
“Let’s agree to fight-trans border crimes. This Bill, apart from meeting the international requirements to fight crime and the war on corruption is a very serious Bill that deserves urgent attention.”
The bill was also supported by Senator Chukwuemeka Utazi who urged the Senate to approve it into law.
The Senate president, Abubakar Bukola Saraki supported the bill and said it would be a key in the fight against corruption.
Meanwhile,The United Kingdom stated that it is working with the Nigerian government for recovering looted funds. Paul Arkwright, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, said that the UK government had no plan to keep the money.
