Carlmont softball coach 1 win from 1,000

Catching up and moving forward with a busy spring:

Jim Liggett, one of the region’s finest coaches, is one win from quadruple digits.

Fifth-ranked Carlmont-Belmont (14-1) won two games at the Wilcox-Santa Clara tournament Saturday, pushing the state’s winningest softball coach’s career total to 999.

The Scots’ next game is Tuesday, when they host Capuchino-San Bruno (7-4).

A former Triple-A outfielder in the Orioles’ organization — he played with Boog Powell and Dave McNally and for Earl Weaver —Liggett was Carlmont’s baseball coach and athletic director when he was approached about leading the abruptly vacated softball position.

Underhand pitching?

Slap hitting?

The incessant chatter?

“I haven’t missed a pitch since,” he said.

To be honest, I don’t miss the three-hour baseball games.

Liggett told correspondent Harold Abend that this will be his final season.

Carlmont, averaging 7.8 runs per game, is hitting just under .400 as a team, led by freshman Ashley Trierweiler (.514) and junior Cameron Kondo (.462, 18 RBIs).

Top-ranked Amador Valley-Pleasanton softball is off to another fast start, thanks largely to Danielle Williams.

The sophomore pitched back-to-back no-hitters with 17 strikeouts in each, including a 5-0 win Friday over defending North Coast Section Division III champion Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland.

Since coach Teresa Borchard took over the program in 2013, the Dons are 80-7, have won two NCS titles and a mythical national crown in 2014 when they went 27-0.

Mitty (9-0) has a first-year softball coach Jon Gron, two freshmen pitchers (Savanna Smith and Hannah Edwards) and a powerful offense led by senior McKinsey Thorpe (.500).

Megan Bower, an all-state performer for Miramonte-Orinda as a freshman last year, has seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 11 games after slugging 11 homers and knocking in 41 runs in 2015.

Castro Valley’s Delaney Heller had a perfect game with 16 strikeouts in a 5-0 win over Liberty-Brentwood on Friday.

De La Salle’s top-ranked baseball team (8-2) has allowed 13 runs — none of which has come in the 18 innings of work by senior Nick Sparks (4-0).

The Spartans have a 1.27 ERA and are hitting .313.

Valley Christian senior Elena Bruckner (181 feet, 1 inch) and Lincoln junior Pamela Amaechi (166-5) rank first and second nationally in the discus, according to athletic.net.

Bruckner is also first in the shot put (53-5).

Other local state leaders:

Sonoma Academy-Santa Rosa sophomore Rylee Bowen (girls 1,600: 4:51.26), St. Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda junior Cooper Teare (boys 3,200: 8:56.07) and De La Salle senior Jonathan Harvey (300 hurdles: 37.42).

Lowell senior Kristen Leung is second in the girls 3,200 (10:33.71) and Granada senior Megan McCandless fourth (10:34.94).

St. Francis senior Darius Thomas is third in the high jump (6-10).

Former Cal guard Randy Duck, who played professionally overseas for seven seasons, has resigned after just one season as girls coach at San Ramon Valley.

The Wolves went 6-20.

The 34th annual San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame awards banquet takes place May 21 at the Spanish Cultural Center.

Robert Giorgetti (St. Ignatius, football, 1964-68), Raymond Greggains (Lincoln, coach, 1969-2009), Donald Kafka (Mission, football, track, 1949-52), Jerry Mahoney (Sacred Heart, basketball, football, 1940-44), Tony Miller (Riordan, football, track, 1984-88), Heidi O’Rourke (SF Merionettes/Lowell, 1969-72), Steve Rubin (Lowell, football, baseball, track, 1957-60), Rusty Taylor (University/Bay, soccer coach, 1979-present) and Herbert Ward (Balboa, football, basketball, track, 1972-75).

Tickets are $50.
