With the current economic situation and a bid to reduce the amount being spent on overheard expenditure, the federal government announced a ban on flying first class by government officials on official trips.

The Punch reports that this was confirmed in a statement issued by Mr Festus Akanbi who is the media adviser to the minister of finance in Abuja on Wednesday, April 6.

Henceforth, ministers, permanent secretaries, chairmen of federal government committees, chairmen and chief executives of parastatals and agencies are to travel on business class.
Before the new directive, some government officials who should have been on business class usually travelled on first class, while many others travelled business class instead of economy class.
The media adviser said the new directive has been captured in a circular on review of overhead expenses which was released by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation.
Akanbi explained Mrs Kemi Adeosun set up the efficiency unit in 2015 aimed at reducing ever head expenses and the new ban on first class travel is one of its recommendations.

The unit was set up to engender transparency and reduce government’s large expenditure through procurement in the various ministries, departments and agencies of the federal government.
