As the battle to decimate Boko Haram rages on, the terrorist group has found a way to lure young Nigerians by providing loans to engage in business.
Reuters report that young entrepreneurs and business owners in the north east were sometimes provided with capital or promised loans to boost their business by Boko Haram recruiters.

Lisa Inks who is the peacebuilding adviser of Mercy Corps agency said on Monday, April 11 that many youths see successful business as a way of escaping from poverty. Butchers, traders, tailors and beauticians require capital. Boko Haram provides this loan which unknown to the youths to is a trap by the terrorist group to recruit them.
Those who cannot pay back the loan either join the terrorists or are killed.
“Boko Haram is tapping into the yearning of Nigerian youth to get ahead in an environment of massive inequality.”
“It is incredibly clever – either such loans breed loyalty or Boko Haram use mafia style tactics to trap and force young people to join them.
According to report obtained by the agency, some young entrepreneurs confessed that without the financial backing of their godfathers who provided capital cash transfer for goods, they would struggle to survive.

Boko Haram spotted the gap and came to fill it by providing fund for business. This was revealed during interviews with some youths who resisted joining the terrorists and former members of the terrorist group.
The report called for increased access to financial and business services and greater efforts to reintegrate people who have fled the insurgency.
Boko Haram attack still continue although the Nigerian government claimed the strength of the terrorists have been weakened.
Meanwhile, the European Union allocated 67 million euro for the rehabilitation and re-integration of captured Boko Haram terrorists.
