The human rights group Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian army to admit that it slaughtered 347 Shiites.
According to the group’s spokesman for Nigeria Mr M.K. Ibrahim, Nigerian soldiers carried out extrajudicial killings between 12-14 December last year during the Zara massacre.
Hundreds of Shiites were killed in Zaria leaving a scene of horrific devastation
Mr Ibrahim said the Kaduna state government’s discovery of mass graves in the area containing hundred of bodies confirms Amnesty International’s findings that a massacre had taken place.
“The horrific revelation by the Kaduna state government that hundreds of Shiites were gunned down and dumped in mass graves is an important first step to bringing all those suspected of criminal responsibility for this atrocity to trial,” Mr Ibrahim said.

“It is now imperative that the mass grave sites are protected in order that a full independent forensic investigation can begin. The bodies must be exhumed and Nigerian authorities should immediately reveal the whereabouts of those held in unacknowledged detention and either charge or release them.”
Mr Ibrahim went on to say that Amnesty International will release a more detailed report on the Zaria incident in the near future.
Fighting broke out between supporters of the Shiite Islamic Movement in Nigeria and its leader Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and the Nigerian army after the Shiites were accused of attempting to assassinate the Nigerian Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai.
