Lionel Messi has beaten Cristiano Ronaldo to the Laureus World Sports Awards. The Argentina and Barcelona star was crowned athlete of the year at the awards.

Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were among other award recipients of the Laureus World Sports Awards.
The tennis duo were named sportsman and sportswoman of the year at the Berlin ceremony for their 2015 achievements.
The 28-year-old Djokovic and Serena won three out of all the four Grand Slam finals in 2015.
Also on the awards list was Brazil’s Paralympic swimmer Daniel Dias who was named disabled sportsperson of the year for winning seven golds at the IPC Swimming World Championships.
