Although the artist’s contribution to music was priceless - and fans around the world are mourning his death today - his contributions were not enough to get him a spot on the Forbes rich list.

Prince ranks at number 16 on therichest.com’s list of wealthy musicians, behind names such as Jon Bon Jovi, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr as well as Elton John. Topping that list with a net worth of $1.2 billion is Paul McCartney.
Prince Rogers Nelson had 20 Top 40 singles and 10 platinum albums during his career, according to bornrich.com. The website says the greatest contributor to his earnings were his successful albums.

“His discography consists of about 35 albums, each of which was a big hit, from 1978 to 2000.
“Apart from this, he also earned a substantial amount through filmography which was triggered by the runaway success of Purple Rain and Batman. He directed the other three films on his own. Further, he [was] an active tourer too, as he got more than 20 musically and financially successful tours to his name,” the site notes.
The bulk of Prince’s investments went into promoting himself, the site says, although he did donate $1.5 million to charities in New York including Harlem Children's Zone, American Ballet Theatre and Uptown Dance Academy).

Celebritynetworth.com notes Prince sold 100 million albums around the globe and was one of the most successful concert acts of his time.
It does seem, however, that his worth could increase as the site says he reportedly had several hundred unreleased songs in his catalog.
Prince also founded his own label and recording studios Paisley Park Records and NPG Records respectively and won a Golden Globe, seven Grammy Awards, and an Academy Award during his career.
