‘Thank God for Sani Abacha': Nigerians blast Ben Bruce for controversial comment
Senator Ben Murray Bruce representing Bayelsa East senatorial district has come under fire following his controversial comment on late General Sani Abacha’s loot.
On April 19, the senator took to his official Twitter handle to express gratitude to the late head of state.
Thank God for Sani Abacha. In some way he was a visionary. In this time of scarcity, his money being returned to us is now our saving grace!
— Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) April 19, 2016
The comment has sparked the fury of Nigerians on Twitter and the number of angry replies is really alarming.
@benmurraybruce Hopefully, this was written tongue-in-cheek? But given the horrors we knew under Abacha, it may not be in very good taste.

Meanwhile, the United States of America has decided to return to Nigeria about $480m (N95bn) considered to have been stolen by Abacha and his family. However, the conditions for the return of the money are still being discussed.
The Department of Justice in the USA launched a Kleptocracy Unit, which will help to track looted funds and money diverted by public officials from Nigeria and other nations.
