Search for MH370 wreckage in SA waters
Police divers are searching the waters off uMhlanga for wreckage which is believed may have been part of the missing MH370 Malaysian Airlines passenger plane.
|||Durban - Police divers were searching the waters off uMhlanga on Thursday for aircraft wreckage, which some believe may have been from the missing Malaysian plane, MH370.
This was after a spear fisherman reported he had spotted what looked like a piece of a plane’s wing there, earlier in the week.
Police divers from the Durban Search and Rescue unit and the Special Task Force battled dangerous conditions and spent much of the day trawling a reef, within the wave zone, near the uMhlanga pier.
But after an intensive search, no wreckage was located. The Daily News understands the fisherman had spotted the “flotsam” three days before he reported it.
Lifeguards and the National Sea Rescue Institute have since been alerted.
Reports of wreckage come after a piece of debris - that authorities last month established as “almost certainly” coming from MH370 - was found by KZN locals, in Mozambique.
The debris, found in December, was sent to Australia, where it was examined by the country’s Transport Safety Bureau and was expected to be sent to Malaysia this week.
Two more pieces of debris - one found on Rodrigues Island, Mauritius, and one other found at Klein Brak River, near Mossel Bay - were this week still being examined in Australia.
