Today, April 22 marks Earth Day for 2016. 

Getting everyone talking about how to reduce their carbon footprint, recycle more, and generally waste less is a great thing, however, Earth Day isn't the only day we should be talking about, as well as actually doing, these things.

In an effort to live more sustainably, here are 5 easy and affordable swaps you can make to your everyday, if you haven't done so already. There are many, many ways to go green that go beyond this list, but these suggestions are a definite step in the right direction. They'll even save you money over time. 

Swap plastic and paper shopping bags for reusable totes

Reusable shopping bags and totes are smart alternatives to plastic grocery bags. Yes, they're more environmentally friendly, but since they're generally roomier and more durable than they're flimsy, plastic counterparts, they're also way easier to carry.

Swap plastic cups and water bottles for reusable bottles

It’s estimated that Americans throw away close to 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. It’s largely a process of unnecessary waste; whether you’re at work, working out, or hiking around the world, there exists an alternative that, in many cases, is more practical than your standard bottle of Poland Spring. Swap incandescent and CFL light bulbs for LED ones

This one may vary depending on how often you actually use your lights, but LED light bulbs are longer-lasting, generally safer, and more energy efficient than their incandescent and CFL cousins. They still cost more upfront, but their prices have dropped significantly over the past few years. If you use them often, you'll shave a bit off your energy bill, and you shouldn't have to worry about replacements for well over a decade.
