1960: College students protesting the execution of Caryl Chessman pause on the San Francisco side of the Golden Gate Bridge during their protest march to San Quentin Prison.
Chessman was a convicted kidnapper and robber in Los Anegeles who was sentenced to the death penalty by the obscure application of a California law. He appealed his execution dozens of times, but was finally executed in 1960 after 11 years on death row. His trial and sentence ignited a national conversation about the legality and morality of the death penalty.
