10 important unwritten laws every Nigerian must obey

If you are a Nigerian, you would have known by now that there are certain rules and regulations we have created for ourselves. There are certain things we are expected not to do; doing them could make you fall into serious trouble and the consequences are always embarrassing even though you need not to get to the court of law.

There are laws that bind every citizen of this country; these laws might not have been written in a book but then they are as important as those laws that found in the book of law. This means Nigerians have created a code of conduct for themselves and they adhere strictly to them.

Let us examine some of the dos and don’ts of these laws and the consequences of not sticking to them:

1. Never go to a party overdressed

You simply cannot afford to overdress to certain parties. Even when you have a very lovely and expensive cloth in your wardrobe you would rather go for something moderate for the fear of looking more radiant than the host or bride. Overdressing means you want to steal the shine of the celebrant and you definitely do not want to do that.

2. Never waste a market seller’s time if you are not buying

If you do not have the intention of buying anything in the market, please do not go on showing your bargaining skills there. You are bound to receive the insult of your life if you do this. Heaven bless your soul, let it be a market in Ibadan, you are so dead.

3. Do not act smart with a conductor

If you really value your integrity and you do not like being embarrassed, please do not even try acting smart with a conductor by trying not to pay.

You would not only be insulted, your generation would share part of the curses and you will not get to your destination health. You could have a black eye, a missing tooth and a torn cloth after this.

4. Learn when to close your eyes when watching film with your parents

While you may be enjoying family time with your parents by watching movies, learn to close your eyes when certain scenes are showing. These scenes are basically the sexual and have contents for adult.

Failure to do this means you would be eyed seriously and if you are unlucky, an interrogative session would start.

5. Do not attempt to jump queue

Nigerians are known to be impatient; so while most people have tried obeying the rule by staying on a queue, do not form James Bond and jump the line.

The number of people that would shout at you at the same time would make you get confused immediately. However, this law could be bent for you if you are heavily pregnant. Even at that, be sure to ask before you do so.

6. Never give an elderly person an object with your left hand

Do not even try doing this at all if you do not want to be insulted. Your parents would also share part of the insult for not teaching you good manners. No one really cares if you are left handed or not, you are expected to use your right hand most of the times. Every Nigerian with good upbringing knows this unwritten law and is expected to pass it on to others.

7. Never imply that your mum is shouting

You do not want to win series of slaps for doing this; it is extremely wrong to tell your mum she is shouting. If you do this, you can be sure she will rebuke you wherever you are.

8. Never form posh on the roads

If you live in Nigeria, you would have known there are so many crazy drivers on the road and you do not want to end up in Igbobi hospital with a broken leg. This unwritten law would help you form ‘tush’ with brain.

Firstly, you have to think of the crazy bike riders who would appear from nowhere and the ‘danfo’ driver who would add to your shock by insulting you after having a near miss with death.

9. Do not dress extravagantly to the market

If you are a trader in Nigeria, you would understand the dangers attached to dressing extravagantly to the market. Firstly, you end up gaining the attention of the wrong set of people and you could be robbed at the long run.

Also, never enter the market with your wallet at the back of your pocket. You know what could happen when you have it in your bag not to talk of displaying it at the back of your trousers.

10. Never make it a habit to correct your lecturer in class

If you do this always, then you would be marked in that class and you could be sure the lecturer would hate you. How dare you form ‘ITK’ with your lecturer? That means you know everything and do not need to be in that class at all. This is an unwritten law every student is supposed to know to be able to scale through that phase of life.
