John Kasich quits Republican race for White House, leaving path clear for Donald Trump
John Kasich tonight quit his campaign to be the Republican candidate for the White House, leaving frontrunner Donald Trump the last man standing.
The Ohio governor announced he was suspending his campaign in a news conference after reports surfaced he was ready to drop out of the race.
He said: “As I suspend my campaign today, I have renewed faith - deeper faith - that the Lord will show me the way forward and fulfill the purpose of my life.”
Earlier today, three campaign officials told The Associated Press Mr Kasich planned to confirm the move, paving the way for Mr Trump to secure the nomination.
It comes a day after Mr Trump was named the presumptive nominee following Ted Cruz’s decision to drop out of the race.
Texas senator Mr Cruz, who had billed himself as the only viable alternative to Trump, took the step after a stinging defeat in Indiana's Republican primary.
He told supporters in Indianapolis: “It appears that path has been foreclosed.
"Together, we left it all on the field of Indiana.
“We gave it everything we've got, but the voters chose another path, and so with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."
Mr Trump is almost certain to contest the presidency with Democratic rival Hilary Clinton after she secured 92 per cent of delegates needed to win the nomination.
Vermont senator Bernie Sanders scored a victory over Hillary Clinton in Indiana, but the outcome will not slow the former US secretary of state's march.
