4 Steps To Combating Mansplaining, According To Ava DuVernay
“If you want to see this person again, you have to, as we say, check them.”
When Ava DuVernay fielded a question about mansplaining during a panel on Saturday, she said she still gets dismissed or treated differently because of her race and her gender.

"It's every day," said the director of 2014's Selma and the upcoming OWN series Queen Sugar. "I think that's the case for so many of us."

But, at Radiant J Productions' Cinefemales festival in Santa Monica, California on Saturday, the acclaimed filmmaker had some straightforward advice for dealing with mansplaining: "If you want to see this person again, you have to, as we say, check them."

Take pity on mansplainers.

"You find that a lot of times it's coming from a place of ignorance more than arrogance," DuVernay told the audience. "So many men have been trained to do that, so I have empathy for that as well. That determines the severity of the check."
